Toccoa River Fly Fishing - September Report

Fly Fishing for Trout on the Toccoa River this month has produced many trout. However, the best times for hooking into trout consistently has been before 11am and after 6pm. The time frame in between has trout with lock jaw. We are catching some fish after noon but for the most part the fish haven't been interested in our offerings.

Your best bet is to plan your fishing trip around the prime feeding times in the morning and late in the evening. An alternative approach is to hit some higher elevation streams during the warmer hours of the day if you aren't willing to put down the fly rod.

For anglers fishing during this warm month please handle your trout with extreme care and please try to keep the trout out of the water for a picture to a bare minimum. Everyone hates to see a beautiful trout turn belly up after the release. If this happens try to net the fish and bring it to an area with good water flow like a small riffle. The oxygen levels tend to be a little higher here. Cradle the fish with its nose upstream and upright until the fish can regain its equilibrium.

With water clarity extremely clear being stealthy, casting ahead of the boat and using smaller tippet sizes are required to increase your trout numbers to net.
