Dale Hollow Lake Trip
Posted By Kent Klewein on January 24, 2011
If you’ve been following our blog lately you probably heard that RJF guide, Eric Welch recently went on a bass fishing trip to Dale Hollow Lake. This lake holds the current world record smallmouth bass at 11 pounds, 15 ounces. Smallmouth junkies travel from all around to fish this awesome fishery. Eric’s goal for the trip was to catch a smallmouth that weighed between 6 and 7 pounds. Although he didn’t meet the goal he did get a handful of bass measuring over 22″ that were solid five-pound class fish.
The group of guys stayed at Horse Creek Dock & Resort in Celina, Tennessee. Eric fished for three days at Dale Hollow and boated lots of smallmouth and some huge porky Kentucky Spotted Bass. The photographs below seem like they are skewed but that’s really how fat those spotted bass were. In all, Eric Welch landed 47 seven bass, but each day there were pull-offs and spits at the boat. The float n’ fly rig produced the best in the morning and late in the evenings, with the plastic tube bite really turning on in between. Mid-day Eric also used his electronics marking fish off of points and bruss piles in 38-42 feet of water. According to Eric, in past years, fishing numbers were a bit higher, but this past winter’s Alewife kill had the bass roaming the lake searching for food. This made fishing hit or miss on some spots of the lake boat overall Eric did a great job of dissecting the lake and finding the bass.
Because of the success of our exploratory trip to Dale Hollow Lake, Reel Job Fishing will be designing a multi-day guide trip package for the future. The area has great lodging and a fishery that’s perfect for our bass clients. We’ll keep everyone posted on our status of this new trip.
