Guides Day OFF on the Lake

Posted By on August 30, 2009

All of us (Eric Welch, Joel Dickey, Kent Klewein) had the day off last week, and we hit the road early in the morning to bass fish on Lake Chickamauga.  The day was flat out awesome, with us landing between 65-70 bass during the day.  We had to dodge some pretty nasty thunderstorms and we got plenty wet, but it was well worth it catching all of those bass.

Our reels were freshly spooled up with the NEW Fluorocarbon GAMMA Touch fishing line and it performed absolutely fantastic.  GAMMA was nice enough to provide us with some sample spools to try out.  Our conclusion of the new fishing line is that it casts smoother and farther than all other fluorocarbon fishing line we have previously fished.  Even better was the super small line diameter and ultra-sensitivity on the 7 pound test.   We compared the line diameter of the GAMMA Touch Fluorocarbon line to other brands of 6-pound test fluorocarbon (Suffix, Pline, Seaguar) and the GAMMA Touch FC was considerably smaller.  It’s really rare to find fishing line of a higher pound test that has a smaller line diameter to smaller pound test line.  Smaller line diameter translates into more bites.  This line is off-the-chain and we recommend it to all our fellow anglers.  Check the photos below of bass we landed on GAMMA Touch fluorocarbon fishing line.

Reel Job Fishing guide, Joel Dickey with a BIG Smallmouth

kent_klewein_smallmouth_bassThe bass were really working the bait and the key was fishing the right locations during generation.  The generation would funnel the bait and other food where the bass were staged up ready to ambush prey in the moving water.  It was really critical locating the hot spots, and RJF guide, Eric Welch had us exactly where we needed to be.  One spot we must have landed 30+ bass on a stretch of bank no more than twenty yards wide.  Some of those fish consisted of smallmouth bass well over 3 1/2 pounds and 20-21 inches in length.

chickamauga_smallmouthOn several occasions we had double-hook ups and here above, we show off a triple-hook up.  We landed bass on a variety of rigs throughout the day.  Fishing plastics that matched the size bait proved to be the ticket, however, we did land bass on a variety of plastics (Lizards, Curly-Tail Worms, Finesse Plastics).  Landing sixty-five to seventy bass in August really shows the high-caliber of bass fishing Lake Chickamauga offers to anglers.  It’s only going to get better as we move into the fall.

We’re excited to guide more of our clients on this special lake.  We recommend booking lake trips during the week when there is less boat traffic on the lakes.  For more information on our guided lake trips please click on the link below.
