Trophy Brown on Dry Fly

Posted By on June 29, 2011

It doesn’t happen every day that you land a trophy brown trout on a dry fly. The 16-18″ size fish are common depending on how well your dry fly fishing skills are, and what location your fishing, but when you land a wild brown over twenty inches you’re witnessing a catch, for most, of a lifetime. Big wild brown trout are the most elusive and educated trout on our rivers and streams. That’s why we don’t catch them most days. There the last fish to feed in prime holes on the water quite often, taking the time to make sure they aren’t putting themselves in a vulnerable or dangerous situation to predators or anglers. Furthermore, trophy brown trout are so in tune with their surroundings they often see anglers coming well before they make their first cast and get lock jaw.

Kevin Mast with a Trophy Wild Brown Trout on Dry Fly at NCF.

Yesterday, Kevin Mast accomplished catching a wild trophy brown trout of this caliber on 5x tippet throwing a foam terrestrial fly pattern to the banks at Noontootla Creek Farms. Unlike most brown trout this guy gave us a huge jump out of the water, that looked like a dolphin at Sea World working a show routine. We battled this trout up and down the river for 10-15 minutes before we finally brought it to the net. Great catch Kevin!.

Below are two other really nice trout landed  at NCF recently.

Tony Mast at Noontootla Creek Farms

The catch above by Tony Mast, was really cool because he had missed this fish earlier in the day with a dry fly. We came back an hour later and tried a second time. His dry fly sat in an eddy for several seconds, and then this beautiful trout gave us a magnificent rise and take.

We’ve landed many others but my clients have not emailed the pictures to me yet. I’ll post as I receive. We also lost many other very large trout on recent guide trips. The dry fly fishing hasn’t peaked yet at NCF. It looks like it will be the later part of July before it gets epic. However, as you can see we still are doing very well fishing dry flies. If you’re interested in booking a guided fly fishing trip please give us a call for more trip details.
