Toccoa River Fly Fishing

Posted By on February 13, 2009

I hit the Toccoa River yesterday to get up to date fishing conditions for my upcoming guide trips.  This past Wednesday storms got the feeder streams pretty muddy.  However, there were sections of the river that were plenty clear enough to wack fish on both dry flies and nymphs.  A few black caddis were coming off with some adult midges.  Below is the big fish of the day taken late in the day.

The delayed harvest section of the Toccoa River was very murky from the rains.  If we get strong rains Friday evening you can bet it won’t be fishable on Saturday.  You can still find some very nice fish on the lower section of the DH.

There are trout throughout the entire DH, but there seemed to be heavier densities of trout on the lower end the other day.  Target riffles dropping off into deep water.  Fish have been rising to caddis hatching.  Streamer fishing was very good the other day for targeting the larger trout.

If you take your time and spot fish from the bank you can get in some quality sight-fishing.  Don’t expect to be the only anglers out there though.

  3. Wish I had seen you up there, I was on the section you mentioned… it was alright, 12″, and a couple small ones on black caddis, and one on a nymph. Water really muddy, and too many bait casters showed up… annoying.

  4. Chris,

There has been extensive poaching on the Toccoa River lately. Local DNR authorities have been contacted but the game warden currently employed has failed to even show up. Claiming the drive was too far for him. Can the Toccoa River ever catch a break? If we had better patrolling I strongly believe everyone would see better fishing conditions.

The Participants illegally fishing have been fishing out of two pontoon boats. One green and one blue. Coolers are stowed on the back of the rafts. Even worse, the poaching anglers have been stashing stringers along the river during their float unloading trout. This is all being done to not have more than their limit on hand. They row back up at the end of the day and collect their illegal numbers of trout.

To all my fellow blog followers please look out for these poachers and voice your concerns. We have strength in numbers.

  5. if seen what should be done if we can’t even call the authorities to do anything about it? Pack a bazooka I guess!

  6. Chris,

Call the Turn in Poachers Hotline 800-241-4113. The more feedback we give them the better chance we have of them dedicating time to patrol the Toccoa River. Thanks
