Toccoa River Fishing
Posted By Kent Klewein on January 30, 2011
I fished the Toccoa River Friday with good client Paul Messer. We got the boat in late morning after the sun got up and the action was on, shortly after. We conservatively put thirty trout in the net with plenty more hook ups that came unbuttoned throughout the day. Overall it was a great late January day of trout fishing in North Georgia. We landed three really nice rainbows during the float with a 20″, 19″ and 17″ all coming on subsurface fly patterns. Among the rest of the trout were a bunch of 10-11″ trout and a couple 14-15″ trout.
Most of the fish we landed seemed to be stockers. I would say about 20-25% of the others were holdovers are natural reproducing trout. The brown trout seemed to hide from us during the day with only two stockers coming to net. The tiny black stoneflies have started hatching and midges were also out and about. Small streamer fishing really was successful for us on the water with tandem nymph rigs also producing. We saw a few fish rising but not enough for good dry fly fishing. Water clarity is somewhat stained but plenty clear enough for quality fishing. Water temperatures were very cold at 38 degrees and only warming up to 42 degrees in the afternoon.

Above are some of the photos I snapped during the trip. The pretty 19″ male rainbow slipped back into the water before we could get a photo. With the $300 full day float trip special Reel Job Fishing is running through February, we encourage everyone to book your trip while the offer lasts. Wonderful stuff. Thanks for posting!
Nice to see some good reports from the Toccoa.
Good to hear that the tailwater is fishing well and that there appear to be some wild fish in the mix.
Fished the Toccoa delayed harvest the other day and landed a couple dozen up to 18″ and had one larger come unbuttoned after a good battle. The small black stones were out along with #14 caddis fluttering on the surface that I saw a few fish rising to. Most of the fish came on a #18 pheasant tail nymph.
btw, Great photo of you by Louis in the January TU calendar!
Dan,
It’s good to hear from you man. One of these days we need to meet up and fish. Especially before the baby comes and the busy guide season arrives. Let’s try to set something up next week if you can swing it. Talk to you soon,
Kent
Nice catch. Looks awesome! Thumbs up
