Midge Larva on Tailwater
So I flipped over a rock the other day on the river and look what I found. Holy crap that’s a lot of midge larva I thought to myself. The rock looked like it was moving in my hand, and that’s when I swiftly decided to tie on a midge larva on my nymph rig. I’ve seen migde larva before but nothing with the densities that those rocks had on them. Every rock I picked up was covered from one end to the other. Next time you fish a tailwater river and the fishing is slow turn over a rock and you may gain valuable insight on whats the top food source available that the trout are keying in on.
When in doubt downsize your fly patterns. It’s truly amazing how small of flies trout will eat. Midge larva for example in the wild can run as small as a size 28-30 hook. In most cases you won’t have to go that small but you probably want to start at least with a size 20 hook. Surf the web for all the varieties of midge larva, pupa and adults out there. You should always have a few patterns and colors to imitate each life stage of the midge when your fishing tailwater fisheries. During the winter months when most of the larger bugs aren’t hatching you would be surprised how often trout’s diets consist mainly of the Diptera family.
