Quick Fishing Report

Posted By on January 22, 2010

I’ve floated the Toccoa River three times over the past seven days and fished one day out at NCF.  Two of the floats produced some pretty good numbers for January. Yesterday’s float however, the trout got lock jaw once the front moved in and the rain came in around 12:30pm.  The days I was on the river, I did not see much BWO presence at all. Don’t know where they’re at, but I hope they start showing up again soon.  It’s a great hatch to get into some quality dry fly fishing on the Toccoa River when they’re coming off.

Little Black Stoneflies have been the dominant bug on the water when there are bugs coming off. Only thing is, I’ve not seen very many trout taking them skittering across the surface at all.  I’ve tried both dry and nymph imitations to mimic this species but the fish have not been biting them.  Tiny olive midges are also sporadically hatching and will fool some trout with the appropriate presentations and fly patterns.  All in all, I’ve floated just about the entire length of the Toccoa these last few floats.  The best tactic for catching fish is, nymphing or throwing small to medium streamers.

February generally is a great time to be out on the Toccoa River.  The fish start to get more active as we start to get some warmer temperatures.  The best fishing has been from 11am-3pm for the most part.  I’ll be out at NCF again tomorrow, and hope the thunderstorms stay out of the picture.  Noontootla Creek Farms has been fishing pretty well and I expect tomorrow to yield some nice trout as long as water levels don’t get to high and eliminate some holes we can fish.

I’ve been booking trips steady lately.  If your wanting to set up a guided fly fishing trip or bass trip please call in advance so we can accommodate you on your preferred trip dates.  Hope everyone’s doing well. As always, thanks for your support and inspiration that continues to fuel my passion to guide.

Keep it Reel,

  1. Sorry to hear the weather shut things down yesterday.

  2. “pretty good numbers” to Kent equaled one of my best days fishing ever! I can’t imagine what the lucky clients get when he comes back with a “great numbers” or something better than pretty good… The quality of fish and the number would have made me happy in the prime season, but for this time of year I was speechless.

  3. Thanks for the report! Hopefully those BWOs will start popping off soon!

  4. looking forward to our trip in 2 weeks…..

i do hope it warms up, though. it’s been cold enough in TX.

  5. Looking forward to fishing with you also Josh. Chris, glad you had a great time fishing. You did really good fishing. Murphy, sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do, the fish just won’t cooperate. Corey, your welcome for the report. I’m sure we’ll see the BWO’s again soon.

  6. hmmm… a net, interesting idea!

  7. Yeah, yeah Chris. If I remember correctly we did manage to land every fish we hooked :) No one’s perfect, and I take the ball busting respectfully.
