Nantahala River – Trout Fishing
Posted By Kent Klewein on April 28, 2009
Finally had some time to get up and fish on the Nantahala River in North Carolina the other day. It was really nice to get into some dry fly fishing. It wasn’t real hot yet but I caught plenty of fish on top. From now through early summer it just going to keep getting better. Black Caddis were out and the females were skittering along the surface dropping their green egg sacks. Adult midges were out and about, and there were a few mayflies sporadically showing up hear and there. Didn’t get into any huge fish but landed some pretty nice ones including a taped
sixteen inch hook-jawed male brown on dry. I don’t have a picture since Louis was fishing well up river from me.
The river is getting pretty crowded so don’t expect to have the water to yourself. As always, you’ll have other anglers that will jump in front of you. Don’t let it bother you, just fish the water thouroughly and you’ll be surprised how many fish you catch working every little seam and eddy. We also did pretty well nymphing the deeper runs and pools.
Below are some more photos Louis Cahill shot during the day. There’s some pretty rad shots.
