Life is Good Today
Posted By Kent Klewein on November 23, 2010
Just like Zac Brown’s lyrics “life is good today”, I found myself humming those tunes in my head as I walked back to my truck at the end of the day. The day could have very well been a bust, so landing a fish of this caliber on public water made it even sweeter.
Often these days I find myself scanning the water more and casting a lot less when I’m out fishing. Just like I tell my clients, “If you can spot the fish and know where to present your first cast, the odds are in your favor”. This holds true on most trout waters. The rainbow above was only caught because I spotted him lying deep just below a waterfall as I was heading upriver to meet my buddy Louis Cahill. If I wouldn’t have been scanning the water looking for trout, I would not have seen this trophy male.
Anyways, it took me a good fifteen minutes to get my nymph rig correct. The fast water overhead called for three BB size split-shot and a high stick drift to get the nymphs down to the strike zone. Three fly changes later I set the hook and the big hook jawed male had a tiny size 18 soft-hackle in the corner of his mouth. Thanks for the killer photo Louis. I’m so lucky to have one of the best photographers immortalizing my catches. When I’m old and immobile I’ll have one hell of a scrapbook to reminisce with.
I’m about to head out for a guide trip this morning, and I’m going to practice what I preach. You’ll find my client and I slowing working up stream scanning the water when we can, looking for that trophy trout before we present our cast. Give it a try next time your out on the water.

You dog! Heck of a fish on the public water.
Great fish Kent!
Great pic! That’s a heck of a fish, congrats.
Kent, I was thrilled to be on that trip with you. I just wish I wasn’t 100 yards upstream and didn’t get to see you land this monster.
That’s a nice fish Kent!!! Was this public water in Georgia(if you don’t mind me asking)?
Great fish man!!
Caleb,
It was on the Nantahala River.
