Alaska Fly Fishing
Posted By Kent Klewein on January 7, 2011
Recently, Louis Cahill made a journey up to Alaska to spend a couple weeks photographing and experiencing the epic fly fishing first hand. The famous Alaska West tent lodge on the Kanektok River was his home base for operations. Of the 10,000 plus photos Louis took during his Alaskan fishing adventure, he was kind enough to take the time to personally forward me a dozen to share on the blog.
Viewing those photos on my computer I couldn’t help myself from reminiscing back to 2006, when I spent a season guiding in the Bristol Bay area of Alaska. I’ll never forget the surreal feeling of pride and real living that I felt deep inside me for those 4 1/2 months in the bush. I don’t think you can experience it without giving up all the luxuries we take for granted day in and day out like running water, cold food storage and central heating and air. Being forced to live off the land through hard work really opens ones eyes about life in general. I just hope one day I’ll be able to return again and witness the vast remoteness, beautiful scenery and superb fishing. Visiting Alaska as a guest next time instead of a being a guide though would just be icing on the cake.
If you’ve always had the dream to plan a fishing trip up to Alaska, I highly recommend contacting Deneki Outdoors, who owns and operates Alaska West. Even if you know this trip isn’t feasible at the moment because of family and job constraints, visit their website anyway. You’ll at least be able to be entertained by the great photos and keep the dream trip alive until one day, when it’s possible.

Kent,
I am part of the management at Alaska West when not in Chile.
Nice to see the photos.
Where did you work in Alaska?
Chris,
How’s it going man. I worked at Mission Creek Lodge at Lake Aleknagik near Dillingham. It was awesome and I would have gone back but I really wanted to concentrate on my business. It’s hard to run and build a guide service and then head out for 4+ months at a time 2,000 miles away. Ok, my present wife might have had something to do with it too
.
I think I actually might have talked to you on the phone before, not sure. Either way it’s great to meet you and I hope all is well. I’ve heard you guys are killing it at the lodges. An awesome staff, stellar management and a brilliant owner is a very very good combination.
Glad you found the post and talk to you soon bro.
Kent
Nice post Kent! Who’s the skinny guy?
Chris, I’m seeing you at Andros South next week aren’t I?
Alaska West rocks. The camp is amazing. The staff if wonderful and I have to say I did have that real living feeling you talked about in spite of the hot showers and awesome food. Not posh but everything that matters is spot on including the fishing. Those guys know how to run a lodge. I can’t wait to go back.
great post as usual
Great pics!!! Alaska then Andros south…..bastard!!!
