Reel Job Fishing Newsletter – 2010
We look forward to a great year of fishing in 2010, and we thank you for your business and continued support. We just couldn’t continue to do what we love, without all your phone calls and emails. We stand by our professional staff as being the elite guides in our area, and we look forward to putting everyone on loads of trout and bass this coming year.
Please take the time to read this months newsletter. It’s packed with the latest fishing reports and Reel Job Fishing news. We hope you enjoy!
Reel Job Fishing Blog is a Success
The last year and half we’ve spent blogging has been hard work but it also has been very rewarding for us as well. We’ve just posted our 251st post, and we thank everyone for participating and giving us feedback on our efforts to bring our followers great content for trout and bass fishing.
We couldn’t have done it without support from people like Louis Cahill, who routinely provides us with dynamite photography for the blog. He’s a big part of our blog and we hope everyone has enjoyed his contributions. We also thank everyone for commenting on our posts as well.
These comments are important to start up conversations between followers and give us ideas for future posts. We encourage everyone to submit suggestions anytime for us to blog about. Bottom-line, the blog was created to keep everyone in the loop about our fishing throughout the year, but it also was created to be a fishing resource for our followers to learn from and interact with other anglers.
February 2010 Fishing Reports
Toccoa River (Tailwater)
The Toccoa River has been tough to guide on lately. The heavy generation schedules have forced us to offer Plan B options for our clients. However, when we have been able to offer float trips we’ve had some good fishing. As always though, during the winter months, the Toccoa River can be on or off. When the BWO’s are coming off, the river is a great place to get into some spectacular dry fly fishing. On the contrary, if they aren’t coming off, you’ll find the best fishing approach to be nymphing or throwing streamers.
February is a great month to throw streamers. Sculpins will begin their annual spawn and big trout will be moving right in behind them to take advantage of the easy food source. Try olive woolly buggers or streamer patterns that have a Sculpin profile this month for the chance to hook into a big brown or rainbow. Black Stoneflies and the Black Caddisflies will be hatching this month as well. So keep your eye out and stock your fly box with appropriate patterns if your on the river when they’re coming off. Also, don’t forget to tie up some black caddis patterns with a dark green butt. This will do a great job of imitating the female’s carrying their egg sacs. With the increased fishing pressure and popularity these past few years on the Toccoa River, anglers need to come prepared with longer leaders and smaller tippet. Doing so will increase anglers hook ups considerably.
Every year clients ask us what is the best time to book a trip on the Toccoa River?
Although we guide on this river year round we’ll gladly give you our honest recommendations on the best time to be fishing on the Toccoa River. Most of our clients want to dry fly fish and the best times to do so are given below.
April – Offers anglers consistent dry fly action during their day of fishing from the Hendricksons, March Browns, and numerous Caddis that show up this month. This month really gets the trout looking up at the surface and we consistently have great fishing trips with numbers and quality fish.
May/June – Our absolute favorite time to guide our clients with dry flies is the months of May and June. Our best hatches of the year show up these months with great numbers of Sulphurs and Light Cahill’s. These two hatches get all the trout in the river feeding, big and small. It’s a great time for beginners getting into the sport to book a float trip with us. This time of year the fish are the most forgiving with drifts and presentations.
On word of advice for clients booking float trips on the Toccoa River. When possible we highly encourage everyone to book float trips during the week when possible. Weekends can get pretty crowded. If your planning on booking a float trip during these peak dry fly months stated above, you’ll need to start giving us a call now to ensure we can accommodate you during these peak fishing months.
Noontootla Creek Farms (The Finest Trophy Trout Water)
Noontootla Creek Farms (NCF) has been our go to fishing destination for our clients these past few months. We’ve guided many clients to their best fishing day for trout of their career. For those of you who haven’t fished this unique stream yet, we highly encourage you to check it out. There is no place like it in the Southeast, and we, as well as many others, believe it to be the finest trophy trout water in the area.
Many clients ask us what makes this water so great? The answer is simply its strong commitment to conservation management. There has been extensive habitat construction on the property to provide the resident trout with the best water quality and holding water. CRP buffers have been planted along the stream to limit sedimentation runoff. Limestone rock has been put in the stream to lower the PH and increase micro-invertebrate populations. The owners have treated the Hemlocks on the property to ensure water temperatures stay cool year round.
Unlike many other trophy trout water in the area and neighboring states NCF discourages stocking unless absolutely necessary. This keeps the wild reproducing resident trout genetics to stay dominant in the stream. This pristine genetic line has been passed down from the last Noontootla Creek trout stocked by the state in the 1960s. It’s a genetic line that can’t be reproduced or copied by other operations and this is what makes NCF unique.
Some of you have probably noticed we recently teamed up with Bent Rod Media, a fly fishing cinematography company based out of North Carolina. They produced a film with us capturing the unbelievable terrestrial fishing that occurs during the summer and fall months at NCF. If you have not seen this great film titled “Down on the Farm” we invite you to check it out by clicking the link below.

Mid-June through September offers anglers some of the best Hopper/Beetle/Ant fishing in our area. It’s without a doubt my favorite time to guide clients at Noontootla Creek Farms. Sight-fishing to big trout with big foam makes for some CRAZY exciting fishing, and we guarantee those that get in on the action will not be disappointed. The secret is out and these days will be booked up quick. If you want to see this killer terrestrial fishing in person we encourage you to call us now to book your spot. FYI, the two miles of water can accommodate two full days of fishing fresh water each day for anglers. If your a die hard hopper fisherman looking to throw foam months before your annual trip out west this is the place to visit.
Reel Job Fishing – Bass Fishing
The lake fishing has been really good lately. We’ve been catching very nice bass on the float N” fly rig and the drop-shot rig the last two months. Its been cold some days, but its been well worth it with the bass we’ve been catching. We are really excited to offer clients for 2010 several new lakes to fish on. For more information on the new lakes you can visit our website for details.
We’re in the process of adding the last remaining lakes to the website. Technical difficulties with Joomla code has kept us from doing so lately, but we’ve got that all straightened out.
We couldn’t be happier with the lake fishing currently, but we have to admit we are really looking forward to the pre-spawn inching its way closer into the picture. It will bring us some of our biggest bass of the year and the most exciting fishing as well. Soon the bass will start to move up shallow and their will be good jerk-bait and tube bite. Mid-February through March is a good time to take advantage of this.
What time should you book if your wanting to catch the big Smallmouth Bass during the pre-spawn?
We tell our clients start booking the end of March with the pre-spawn peaking generally around Mid-April. Water temperature is the big factor, plus moon phase. As always, feel free to give us a call to stay in the loop on the current conditions. But don’t wait until the last minute to book. We have already started booking Smallmouth pre-spawn trips in April.
Also, keep in mind different species spawn at different times, and they all spawn in stages (not all at once). So if you can’t make the Smallmouth Bass pre-spawn bite you may be able to catch the Largemouth Bass pre-spawn. Either way Spring is the time to be on the lake bass fishing. With all the lakes we guide on we promise to put you on the lake that’s fishing the best in your chosen time frame. So keep that in mind when booking, if we recommend an alternate lake to fish. It’s our job to put you in the right place at the right time.

I have no sticker, I would love to give you free advertising by sticking to the back of my car, but I need a sticker first Kent!
Chris,
I’ll send one in the mail tomorrow for you. I’ve got a couple others going out as well. Thanks for sporting it on your ride.
Great Job man….have’t checked my emails yet to see how it looks there….will let you know.
Hey,
Got the newsletter and watched the youtube videos! OMG! Makes us want to go! I sat here with a smile on my face the whole time I was watching! We sent it to a couple of our friends from our fly club. Hope we can get up there sometime this spring/ early summer. Keep up with the videos! Our fishing here has been affected by the fish kill from the record cold weather. We were encouraged by catching some speckled trout yesterday in the Idnian River Lagoon. Would have loved to get some snook but only saw one dead floating one. So sad! We hear some locally did survive though. Thanks again for the videos! Looking forward to our future fishing trip with Real Job Fishing (Kent, Our Man!)

Sherry & Paul,
It is so good to hear from you two FISHY dudes! Sorry to hear about the fish kill. I think things will turn around for you soon though. If not, you know you can always head up my way for the trout gig. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for passing it along to your fly club buddies. Bent Rod Media did a fabulous job creating it. I look forward to doing more work with them now that they brought me on board with them.
It’s always good to hear from you guys. Thanks for the comment on the post. I’ll be in touch. Oh yeah, remember to send me your fishing pics when you get back into them
Kent, Once again thanks for the great info! I always check out your blog, keeps me from going through fishin withdrawals in the winter. Although, catching wild browns on dries on the SoHO in Feb also works! Just got back. Need to go fishing sometime.
Corey,
Nothing like catching fish on the SoHo in February. It’s a great river for dry fly fishing. It’s only going to get better as we move into spring and summer. I really wish it was closer to me. I’d be over there all the time. Give me a shout if your going to be in my neck of the woods.
Im over that way bout every weekend. Ill give you a shout
