Big Trout, Whitewater, and Streamers

Ryan running some whitewater - Photo By: Louis Cahill

The other day Louis Cahill and I hit the road early to meet good friend Ryan Dunne, from Bent Rod Media.  Our plans were to stick behemoth trout casting lead and big streamers. As usual though, what generally happens when you specifically choose to target the big boys, your plans don’t always pan out like you want them to.

I landed the gold medal that day for being a complete moron and letting a big fish LDR me right off the bat.  Air humping in the front of the boat and celebrating my big fish hook-up, the big trout spit the hook and flipped me the bird for mocking it.   I deserved it and I got ragged on for quite a while from the guys.  We landed some  fish nymphing seams during the day, and had numerous big fish chase down our streamers but turn away at the last second.

It was a fun day despite the low numbers and lack of trophies landed.  We’ll be doing it again soon, and next time we’re going to snap some photos of some behemoths for sure. There’s no doubt the big trout are there and ready to be caught.  We’re just going to have to work a little harder to land them.

Keep it Reel,

  1. Great report and Pics.

  2. You win some you lose some, but you can do either if you aint out there trying. Good post.

  3. Very true Ben. Plans will eventually fall into place as long as your out fishing. Hope your trip to the Nantahala turns out to be a great one. Get there early before everyone else does. You’ll have some peace and quiet for a few hours.

  4. lol, must have been a really nice fish to deserve an air humping…
